Penhouse Suite Hotel International, Las Vegas

During his performances in Las Vegas at the International Hotel (which was sold to the Hilton Hotels corporation in 1970 and was renamed the "Las Vegas Hilton" in 1971), Elvis lived in the Penthouse Suite, room 3000, located on the 30 of the Hotel, from its first performances in 1969 to its last performance in December 1976. A luxurious suite where Elvis would spend most of his time, during his stay during the seasons of his shows in Las Vegas.
The 30th floor was also occupied by his entire Memphis Mafia entourage and the people who accompanied him.
Due to the location of the Suite, and for obvious security reasons, Elvis could not access the stage through the main entrance and therefore, every day, every time he had to go down to perform his two concerts, he was forced to go through endless corridors , pass between kitchens, take several elevators
...an unpleasant, endless and totally inappropriate journey for an artist to access the stage, accompanied, of course, by his entourage and security personnel, both his and the Hotel's. It is unthinkable that any artist other than Elvis would have agreed to go up and down those endless corridors between kitchens and service elevators daily to get to the stage. That says a lot about Elvis's way of being, that he stoically wasted his time and effort without demanding anything. It also says a lot about the lack of consideration on the part of the Hotel for not having enabled an appropriate area to have direct and dignified access to the stage, as Elvis deserved.
The problem is that the location of the main elevators that went up to the 30th floor had no other option or alternative, except going through the kitchens and service elevators, which is where Elvis had to access. Surely if some type of pertinent reform had been studied, a solution to all this could have been found.
At this time in 1970, Priscilla says that when they first arrived at the room they were delighted. She liked it a lot and so did Elvis, they were very comfortable and had their own space, as if it were her house. The rooms were very spacious and luxurious... everything was very nice. She says that at that time, her relationship with Elvis was very good and during the day they stayed there, where they had very good times. At night, after the shows, they would go out for a while to play at the Casino.
Elvis also received many people and friends in the Penthouse Suite after his shows and they had parties until the early hours of the morning.
From the day Elvis began to live in that Suite, it was never used by anyone other than Elvis and remained his exclusive property until the day of his death....

"The Magic of the Show"

1970. The rehearsals prior to the scene, the recordings that Elvis is going to make in the studio. Everything that Elvis Presley is going to do from now on to achieve his success before the public. Elvis achieved on stage what many singers had wanted to convey to their audience.
Watching him perform was quite a spectacle, but watching him rehearse was a master class in direction and musical nuances. With his voice he caressed the senses but with his body movements, his arms, his hands, everything he showed was the true intention and interpretation so that the musicians followed his orders in interpreting the score. Without leaving any doubt about the air, a nuance, an accentuation..., crescendo, diminishing, forte, piano..., he was the ink printed on sheet music...
With a single finger he could convey his intentions. It was something innate in Elvis Presley, his particular rhythm, his energy, his feeling on the surface... All of this, canned for years, would be unleashed from this moment on in him. And this is what he will be able to discover before the musicians and before the public.

https://youtu.be/8EcRTFN4uQ0

Any conductor worth his salt should convey all this to the orchestra and Elvis conveyed it to us in his concerts. Until then, although he was always the owner of his feelings and controlled his musical mission in the studio, in some way he could be a little limited by the Musical Director or the producer who gave the direction to follow. But starting in 1970, Elvis took the reins of his career and was not going to let anyone tell him on stage what he wanted to do. And anyone who doesn't understand this is going to be out of his way. He will only want professionals, the best, those who can follow his interpretation and his sensitivity. And this is going to make his show something magical and special. Giving it that particularity that no one will have in Concert...

Curiosities about the personality of Elvis Presley

Elvis and his mythsAn artist admired by Elvis since his youth was the singer Jimmy Dean. During the rehearsals of the film "That's the way it is" in July 1970, he went to see him on his show. Elvis met Jimmy on the TV show, where he would be interviewed by him, on the Jimmy Dean WMAL-TV Show , on March 23, 1956. Actually they were a few sentences to introduce Elvis. Jimmy Ray Dean was an American country music singer, radio and television host, actor, and businessman.
He would also be known for his brand of "Jimmy Dean" sausages, as well as the spokesperson for the television commercials for him. Winner of the Grammy Best Country & Western Recording award for his song "Big Bad John" in 1961. And nominated 5 more times. Elvis was a fan of Jimmy Dean, he liked his way of singing and this was one of his favorite songs "Big Bad John."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_qX5bPbPUo

Jimmy sang on many occasions at the The Desert Inn, also known as the D.I., was a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, which operated from April 24, 1950 to August 28, 2000.Elvis was to see one of his performances in July 1970. When Jimmy was performing, one of the microphones stopped working and Elvis, surprised and upset, went to see what was happening between the boxes, where the technicians who had not solved the matter were and finally gave him the new microphone to solve the problem. Finally the microphone was fine, he had entered the stage and the audience recognized him and applauded him.

Elvis was finally able to enjoy his idol's performance. When Elvis was performing in Las Vegas at the same time as Jimmy, he went to visit him. He used to go quite often when he worked at the Hilton (the International Hotel would change its name) and Dean sang at The Desert Inn. It was after the last show, he liked his performance and his vocal backing group. And sometimes he called him to invite him to his meetings after the shows, to sing Gospel... And from then on in some performances Elvis would cut one or two songs to leave his show and see the end of the one Jimmy was doing.
Elvis arrived without his entourage, only with his driver and appeared in his dressing room with his eternal smile... they had music as a common bond that would make them come together and enjoy singing gospel, country and sharing good times. Jimmy Dean and Elvis Presley shared the artist's time, in the era that would eventually come in Las Vegas, they would come to appreciate each other as artists. And Jimmy spoke of him as someone special, generous and, above all, a musician at heart...

"Curiosities about Elvis's personality."

"Elvis and the myths of him"

The similarities between Dino and Elvis.
Elvis Presley also had his own idols, artists that he adored from a young age, like any normal person. One of his favorite artists was Dean Martin, whom he admired for his singing.
He was always one of his favorite singers and finally, like every fan, he wanted to see him perform in person and had the opportunity to meet him and see him perform live. Dean Martin like Elvis had a very humble origin. He was born in 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio.
His family is of Italian origin, his father is a barber and his mother is a housewife. As a young man he played the drums, it was one of his hobbies and he spoke Italian since he was a child, so his way of speaking in English was sometimes mocked by his schoolmates. He began working as a laborer, croupier and even as a boxer under the pseudonym Kid Crocetti. Through boxing he met a club owner where he began singing. His beginnings in the artistic world were progressive, he sang in nightclubs and in the mid, early 1940s he met a very young comedian named Jerry Lewis with whom he finally became an artistic partner and with whom he would achieve success in the cinema.
When she separated from him due to rivalry, his solo success in film and as a singer began for many years. A magnificent and warm voice like that of Elvis Presley. Dean Martin was also an elegant artist who was close to his audience and had excellent technique as a singer. His simple way of singing, with effortless vocalization, characterizes him as a performer, although he never composed a score. A wonderful baritone voice with a special and different timbre, which will always be remembered for his successes.
"The King of Cool" Like Elvis Presley, he was very cautious and suspicious when the British invasion arrived in the 60s, Dean Martin, like all American artists of the moment, would be suspicious of the success obtained when The Beatles invaded the charts in the US and everybody. It is said that Dean Martin told his 14-year-old son that he would knock his "friends" off the charts... and he finally did... with his song "Everybody Loves Somebody", which replaced the song "A Hard day's night" from the charts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTHv60y7xCs

He had his own TV show from 1965 to 1974 on NBC, The Dean Martin Show (Elvis loved this show) and in his career as an actor he will be remembered for his performances in "Río Bravo", "The Dance of the Damned" or his own series Matt Helm...And also, like Elvis, he performed in Las Vegas for many years, his show being characteristic. Another similarity in their very similar way of being, the two were men with a lot of humor, simple and close, the sensuality of his voice, the attraction of the public... also inveterate womanizers and with a smile always on his face.
The two admired each other as artists and went to see each other perform at their shows in Las Vegas. At his performance in Las Vegas in 1970, Elvis recognized his idol Dean Martin and told him: "They call me the King of Rock, but you Mr. Martin are the King of Cool."
And he sang a few lines from his most popular song "Everybody loves somebody"...
Two artists with charisma and a wonderful voice, two kings of the show...

The contradictions in the personality of Elvis Presley

There are many unknowns and unexplained circumstances on the Elvis Presley Trail. Partly due to the discretion of the person involved, partly due to the moment and because there really are not enough reasons to understand the reason for the situation. Elvis was a generous, kind, funny, sometimes capricious man, with a sometimes strong character and, above all, when something entered his brain he was insistent and if an idea or mistrust pursued him... it was difficult for him to leave his mind. mind.
The reason could be in his early years, his sensitivity, being an only child... his mother or perhaps, in his youth, seeing himself so different from others... Because Elvis was always different, his way of dressing, his hair, his way of singing... his attractiveness and his shyness...
The difference sometimes creates admiration or the opposite, other times rejection and ridicule. For this reason, Elvis was very distrustful of his experience and only knew how to trust people in his family and his Mafia friends. But sometimes not even in them, his way of showing his friendship was to give gifts, so in many cases it could be said that it was very difficult for him to express his true feelings with his friends. Only on very rare occasions did he do it or speak honestly about his concerns, this he would do with women. But the friends were there to have fun, joke, sing...

Most of the people around him had been working alongside him for years and were friends from years ago. His Mafia members were his world, his laughing companions, his playmates, his accomplices and protectors... In November 1970 Richard Davis was fired by Vernon, Elvis's father. In a cold way and almost without thinking about it... The excuse of the economic budget would be to dispense with his services, he said it was a cost reduction measure. But the strange thing is that it was done in the middle of the tour and no one gave any further explanation.
Elvis didn't say anything even though he was a good friend, and he could have stopped it. To get an idea of what the Memphis Mafia really was, it is important to know each person's experience, but at least we know, from Richard Davis himself, what he always told about Elvis. In interviews Richard always told about those times: "Elvis treated us like a family, not like employees. It was a big family. They were all friends, they got along well and everything was done based on Elvis's customs and life, because If the person didn't adapt, they wouldn't last with them.

Elvis didn't like it when someone didn't fit in with the group and he wouldn't admit it. Everything was done in a group, if Elvis slept, they slept. When Elvis went to party they shared the fun and the group was fun and they were always comfortable," Richard said he felt that way. When someone was not well, Elvis could sense it, he was very sensitive and would say: "What's wrong?". Regardless of the work, it was fun, and they were very good years. Possibly this is why, even if he was unfairly fired, he would still remain attached to the group and to Elvis. Richard entered the world of Elvis in 1962 and since then he was on the payroll as a worker, until the 15th. November 1970. It was strange that he was fired when Elvis was going to sing at the San Diego Sports Arena and had two subsequent shows.
Richard was a multi-tasker... wardrobe manager, bodyguard, stuntman, stand-in, he was the person in charge of running all the errands, especially on movie sets and in the office. But above all, a friend of Elvis, the most discreet man, who would never write any book, a joker in his manner, would always remain a friend of Elvis after this. They say that Elvis was in a period of general distrust since the threats made to him, but the truth is that he never said "no" to Richard's dismissal. The friendship I had with him would seem not to be important, because he did nothing to prevent it at this moment, but it was not like that... previously this happened with other friends like Scotty, DJ... and he did nothing either.
What is clear is that during this time Elvis spent a lot of money on weapons, jewelry, cars, houses, weddings, etc... But is friendship really mediated by gifts? At the bottom of all this he still had that special way of being that would make him feel alone even though he was surrounded by people until the end of his days.

"Following the Way of the King...
From Tupelo to Memphis 56 On Tour. The president and the King

The private world of Elvis.
Joe Guercio, Orchestra Director

Joe Guercio was musical director of the International Hotel in Las Vegas, when he was approached to direct Elvis in his third Las Vegas season.
His style had nothing to do with the artistic world of Elvis, so he was a little skeptical at first regarding his music or his way of performing. He had directed for artists such as Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Pattie Page, etc.
Composer of songs like "Distant Shores" or ""I won't cry", he was also an arranger. Although with Elvis the arrangements were normally in charge of Glen D. Hardin, his pianist.
When he met Elvis, even though he thought he had great talent and was a great artist... his way of being had him very disconcerted in rehearsals, because he was a fresh, spontaneous and variable artist. .
He realized that he made changes according to his thoughts and directed everyone and everything as he saw fit at the moment... It is clear that his musicians followed him every time he proposed something, changing what was said or giving a new indication.
For a conductor like him, this was disconcerting. Joe Guercio's best-known anecdote occurred in the first days of acting.
Someone asked him what he thought of Elvis, if he liked working with him? Then his comment would be: "It's like a marble rolling on a marble staircase"... The next day when Joe entered and opened the door to his dressing room, in the dark, he heard a strange noise as he entered. He turned on the lights and what was his surprise when he saw everything flooded with marbles! The entire floor full of marbles, everywhere, even in the sink.
He imagined how the mafia guys, all their slaves... the night before buying all the marbles in the world. He also left a sign on the mirror that said: "Follow the marble. Signed: E.P."

Guercio would be the one who inspired at the beginning of the show in 1970, a six-note rising and falling song, known as the notes of passage to the stage, for Elvis Presley to come out before the audience. His signature entry...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhZTTFckux8

Guercio is credited with proposing at the entrance the theme that became popular in the film "2001 A Space Odyssey." "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" op. 30 was a symphonic poem composed by Richard Strauss. But this was not really the case, his companions in the Mafia said that the idea was Elvis's. He saw this movie, 2001, a year before and he liked it a lot. Always a cinephile and enthusiast, they contradict the version by claiming that it occurred to him because he wanted to have an entry that would mark something great... and so it was.
This overture would give way to a grandiose image that would transcend time and remain linked to its own spectacle. Although Guercio said that his wife gave him the idea when they saw the film... obviously it could not have been true, simply because the film was released two years before he met Elvis and conducted for him.

He worked with Elvis from August 1970 until 1977. His memory of Elvis was that he got to work with a great family of professionals, the musicians, the choir. He always commented that it opened a completely different musical world to the one he was used to. Over time Joe Guercio came to understand Elvis and love him like everyone else who worked with him.

The musical world of ELvis

James Burton

Starting in 1969, Elvis Presley had to find his own team of musicians, his own band, to give him the security of being able to do what he wanted with his music. Scotty Moore, his lead guitar for years, and Dj Fontana, his drummer, the legendary musicians of their golden age, had been left behind because they were not informed in time of everything that was planned from then on. The last time he would be with them was in 1968 and they could not be part of Elvis Presley's return to the stage in 1969.
An oversight and the commitments made would do the rest, as a consequence Elvis had to form a new band of musicians with which he could interact live and tour concerts. James Burton Guitar, James Wilkinson rhythm guitar, Jerry Scheff Bass, Glen D Hardin piano and Charlie Hodge Acoustic guitar-vocals.

James Burton would be chosen as lead guitarist and would come to have a very special relationship with Elvis as a musician. When he met him, he got on very well with him, there was a special chemistry, to the point of asking him to look for the rest of the members, or advise him regarding the musicians he could choose. He would become the pillar of his band from so .
As a musician, a magnificent artist who has been recognized and admired for years. He was born in 1939 and since he was a child he learned to play on his own, but it was at the age of 13 that he managed to get his first guitar bought, although he would get a better one over time... he set his sights on the Fender Telecaster from the year 53, which would be his favorite for a long time. His self-taught, original way of playing would make him a staff musician at the age of 14 on the KWKH Radio station, where he met musicians of the time from whom he would learn, such as Sonny Trammell, country guitarist Chet Atkins. and producer, Muddy Waters blues genius...
He also specialized in playing the dobro (acoustic resonator guitar). His style grew apart and became original. Dale Hawkins recorded his famous song Suzie Q with the riff composed by James Burton that would become legendary, he was only 17 years old...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wq2f_X_6Nk

His style is characteristic of the use of the plectrum as the fingers and he is known as the inventor of chicken picking, a technique of playing the guitar that consists of choosing with a selection and one or more fingers alternatively or simultaneously . Great steel guitar and dobro player. Starting in 1958, he moved to Los Angeles and began working with Ricky Nelson, and from there as a session musician to work with the great artists of the time. Burton was the favorite guitarist of practically all the major players. California record labels from the '60s onward, playing integral licks and riffs on classics by the Beach Boys, the Monkees, the Everly Brothers and many others. Elvis wanted him to be part of his group and already tried to have him in 1968, but it was not possible because James was accompanying Frank Sinatra at that time.

From 1969 until Elvis' death, James Burton was part of his group on Concerts and Recordings. And he also continued to alternate with some other artists. After Elvis' death he has performed concerts with various members of the TCB Band who were then part of Elvis's original band. He is currently still active. As a person, James was always very generous, like Elvis Presley, he would also share his success with those most in need. James has his own charitable foundation..
The James Burton Foundation supports music education for those in need through donations of guitars, music education to schools, hospitals, and community service organizations. His mission is to give his knowledge to those who want to learn to play and cannot do so. In hospitals we teach children, young people, adults and the elderly. An admirable musician and person... FROM TUPELO TO MEMPHIS

Anécdota con Jerry Lee Lewis

Anecdote in the 1970s.
Lamar Fike, friend of Elvis Presley and member of the Memphis Mafia, spoke about this particular anecdote that occurred at Graceland, but Lamar Fike does not clarify the date, he only says "in the 1970s." Jerry Lee Lewis went to Graceland with a gun one night and I was at the door outside. He was in his Rolls Royce in the driveway and he kept banging on the door, he was drunk.
Lamar Fike was in his room when Elvis called him and said, "I want you to do something." Lamar went to his room. Elvis had three cameras installed that watched everything on the property and he could monitor for strangers, about five screens. Elvis told him, "Just look down." Lamar saw that Jerry Lee was trying to get in and seemed drunk.
Lamar said that Elvis never liked Jerry Lee. She never got along with him. They were two very special men and Jerry Lee's ego was very big, which is why it is believed that he was always jealous of Elvis. On the other hand, Elvis was never attracted to Jerry Lee. He knew him and had sung with him in that magical Jam session on 12/4/1956 with Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. But as a person he never attracted her much attention and although he was an excellent pianist, ultimately she didn't care much about him.
Although it is true that he once saw him at a party... Lamar asked him what he was going to do... and Elvis called the police so as not to face a violent situation.
Harold Loyd, who was at the doors, had already notified the police to arrest him.
It is said that it was November 23, 1976 and that this is what Jerry Lee shouted at Elvis: "Damn bastard! Let him come down if he has balls! ... Tell him that the murderer is waiting for him, "The killer", the real one. king of Rock and Roll."

Jerry Lee Lewis was arrested for threats and public scandal. JL Lewis when he was interviewed said that he was worried about Elvis because he knew that he was depressed and wanted to make him a proposal. He had called him several times and was never able to speak to him. So he tried to see him the day before and this time he was leaving a party and had been drinking... Carrying the gun was something casual, he had no intention of killing him.
Jerry Lee Lewis, a magnificent piano player who remained active despite the years. He was born the same year as Elvis and was also discovered by Sam Philips at Sun Records.
In 1957 Lewis achieved massive success with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and from this came fame. His path was different from that of Elvis, but nicknamed "The killer" for his energetic performances. From Tupelo to Memphis .
